October 2022 - Seeing

Reflections: Seeing

Seeing afresh is such an interesting experience. The act of seeing in itself is truly magical: the exquisite design of nature that has evolved the physical aspects of how the eyes work, and how they connect to the brain so that we can begin to make sense of the world - this is all extraordinary.

The experience of 'seeing afresh' is, I suppose, connected more to that interpretation by my brain than it is to the practical workings of my eyes. Some things become so familiar that we barely see them properly at all. This can be disconcerting if I am asked to describe an item or a place, and I cannot remember even basic attributes of something I see every day.

I have also had the experience of looking out for someone I know well in a crowded place. I remember wondering if I would recognise them, if they would recognise me, amongst all the other faces.  I can only guess at how heartbreakingly poignant this must be when someone you love is experiencing any sort of condition that involves the type of memory loss causing them not to recognise those closest to them. I send deep love and compassion to all in that situation.

Recently, on a walk on the cliffs in unexpectedly warm and calm weather, I took out the new No 2 Deck cards to take some photos - the plastic seal-top bag they were in split at what should have been the non-opening end, and quite a number of them spilled out onto the rock. On most days they would have immediately been picked up and whirled away in the turbulent winds that blow on that headland. This day however I was fortunate - and managed to pick them all up again, even with time to take a photo first.

I am intrigued at how the cards appear here - at all different angles, some obscured by others, some upside down - as Seeing and Create are here.

Seeing - now the card is the 'right' way up, it has another message and now, after exploring here in these reflections, I also see the word, the colour, the two together - more clearly.

For you, for your meditations or journal, one or more of these suggestions may appeal to you:

  • What do you see in the jumble of cards?
  • Does one card stand out for you?
  • Write about a time when you have been surprised by an experience of seeing more clearly

Last call for "Rediscover Your Inner Wisdom" six-week programme, begins 3rd October, Zoom gatherings on Wednesdays at 11.00 am UK time

The next six-week turn around the Compass Rose begins very soon, I will be opening the private group and inviting those enrolled to settle in this weekend, the first weekly prompts will be shared there on Sunday 2nd October.

If you have not yet signed up, and would like to, the metaphorical doors are open until Wednesday 5th, when we gather at 11.00 am UK time for our first group circle on Zoom. Full details are here.

Final group programme for 2022: "Time for You" four week offering

The final group offering of 2022 will be a four-week gentle circle on the theme of "Time for You" - allowing you to take at least an hour each week for yourself in what can be a very busy time for many as we navigate our way through the annual festive season. It can also be a time when loneliness and loss can be highlighted, whether you are in the centre of a bustling household or literally by yourself.

The Circle can offer a place for all and any experiences simply to be witnessed without judgement - and that does not mean that you have to share anything, it is the simple act of gathering together that brings the community and support we can crave. Even though this is a virtual community and we gather on Zoom, the connections are real and powerful.

The booking link will be on the website soon, and in the next monthly newsletter, for now the basic details are that there will be a taster circle on Thursday 17th November at 2.30 p,m. UK time. The link takes you to the Facebook event, if you prefer not to book the taster there, simply reply here and I will send you the Zoom link closer to the date.

The programme will begin on Monday 21 November, with the weekly Zoom calls on Thursdays at the same time.

If you would like to know more simply reply to this email, or
contact me here to ask any questions or to arrange a time for a Zoom chat.

Dare to Blossom Monthly Circles on Zoom - a choice of day and time

The drop-in circles are held twice each month The next dates are Saturday 8th October at 11.00 am, and  Monday 24th October at 7.30 pm (UK times).

You can find the events on Facebook,  or simply reply to this email and ask me for the Zoom link. It is always pleasure to welcome those of you who prefer not to connect via social media, all you need to join us is the Zoom link that I send to you in advance of the time.

Payment is by donation, depending on your circumstances. People offer from zero to £60. I host the circles with no expectation, simply deep gratitude for your presence.

One to One Coaching

For many people, the deeper connection of one to one sessions is perfect for them once in a while, either for a short block of six, or an on-going arrangement as and when required.

Either way, I would love to have a Zoom chat with you if you would like to explore the option of one to one coaching with me. There is no pressure, simply an opportunity to find out what would be useful for you, and if my approach would be good for you.

If you click on the 'Book Now' Passionflower, it will take you straight to my calendar to book a twenty minute complimentary call. If you prefer, to read more about the Rediscovery Coaching process click here,

“I have found my sessions with Mary to be a good balance of ideas for the practical things I can do, and the bigger picture reminder of what I want to achieve. This has helped clarify the direction  I want to take and also sparked ideas of how to get there. Mary helps as a reminder to stay true to my experiences and has allowed me to be comfortable with who I am and having balance in life and my work.”

You can read more testimonials here on my website.

A complete review of one to one coaching offers and pricing is planned before April 2023, so if you think you would like to explore the possibility of accessing my support as we come to the end of this year, act now - if not now, then when? When will you dare to blossom?

I send wishes for health and happiness for you and all you love.

Thank you for joining me here this month, any thoughts, feedback, or questions are always welcome.

September 2022 - Inspiration

Reflections: Inspiration
"Your Powerful Voice" six-week programme, begins 5th September

Dare to Blossom Monthly Circles on Zoom - a choice of day and time
One to one coaching

Reflections: Inspiration

Where does inspiration come from? I have been struggling to find some to write some reflections here today to share with you. There are many quotes about 'not knowing' and 'living the questions' - with a nod to Rilke for that last phrase, yet today I don't feel like writing about those, it feels I could be in danger of repeating earlier musings in past newsletters.

So, I pick up a card from my 'Compass Rose' patterned dish.

Aha, yes please - I would like to bring Light into my writing and into my words. To shine a light without need for intention or 'reason'. This tells me also not to take myself so seriously. To take a gentle, a light, approach to my own writing, the same as I would for someone else who was finding any task a challenge.

Another card? Sanctuary. A deep seagreen colour in my eyes. Maybe the green of the woods for those of you who love the light filtered through the canopy? For me a Sanctuary can be a place to let go, of my own expectations of my self, and of others. And of their expectations of me. A place to rest.

One more? I love the pattern of threes....

Now I am laughing out loud - of course, Peace will be found in my Sanctuary, and the Light will shine around me.  Remembering to use my own tools (as many of my own coaches have often said to me), to draw from the dish of Rediscovery Cards that sit literally under my nose, on my desk, has brought me gifts.

For you, for your meditations or journal, one or more of these suggestions may appeal to you:

  • Choose one, or more of these words and flow write your first responses
  • Look around you, what is literally 'under your nose' to explore in your writing, or doodling, or painting?
  • Pick a book off your shelves and open it at a random page. What word or phrase catches your eye? Explore that if it feels light and fun.

"Your Powerful Voice" six-week programme, begins 5th September

The next six-week turn around the Compass Rose will begin on 5th September, and end on14th October.

There will be taster circles on Thursdays 25th August and 1st September at 2.30 pm, and  Wednesday 31st August at 11.00 am., where you can simply experience the process for yourself in a small supportive group.

For many, me included, the idea of 'power', let alone having, and using, my powerful voice, is a challenge. Maybe downright terrifying. (As is 'daring to blossom' at times.) And so, in the Circle, we will step forward together. A powerful process,  not simply an intellectual exercise; or a whimsical game - even if the visualisation with the title of 'Magic Carpet Ride' may seem so.

Indeed, it is a deep healing, and a blossoming. My coaching philosophy has always been start right here and take small steps, whilst acknowledging the past that has brought me to this place. Not to dwell in the past, but to acknowledge and to be grateful for the learning, and then let go.  Read more on the Dare to Blossom website here.  If you have any questions, contact me by simply replying to this email, or via the Contact page on the website. To save you looking it up, the fee for the full six weeks, with a weekly Zoom gathering, is £159. Payment by two instalments can be arranged, and there is a discount for members of the Stay Connected Group of people who have taken part in any of my programmes.

One to One Coaching

September is the perfect time for a fresh start, a re-evaluation of where you are going and what you are doing. The literally fresher weather (especially after a hot summer such as in the UK this year) is reinvigorating. In tis part of the world this is also the time of the new academic year, of new challenges and opportunities for fresh learning. In other parts of the globe you may be coming into spring time, with the joy of new growth.

If you prefer, to read more about the Rediscovery Coaching process click here, or on the painting below.

I take a limited number of clients at any one time, so if you think you would like to explore the possibility of accessing my support this September, act now - if not now, then when? When will you dare to blossom?

I send wishes for health and happiness for you and all you love.

Thank you for joining me here this month, any thoughts, feedback, or questions are always welcome.

August 2022 Time for You, Time for Me

Welcome to the Dare to Blossom Newsletter

Reflections: Time for You, Time for Me
"Midsummer Magic" Art Sale, ends 31st July

Dare to Blossom Monthly Circles on Zoom - a choice of day and time
Future deep-dive programmes

Reflections: Time for You, Time for Me

"Time for You" is the theme for the August short programme, running for four weeks, with Zoom gatherings on Wednesdays at 11.00 am, with a taster circle on Wednesday 27th July). (see more details below)

Today my thoughts turn to "time for me". I don't know if this is true for you, but I know I find it easy to keep on being busy being busy. Especially for those of us who are self-employed there always seems to be 'more' to be done - writing, planning, publicity, marketing, supporting the people in my community.

And yet, sometimes I notice that I could be a better friend to myself, a better coach maybe, and suggest - gently, as I would to others - that maybe I would benefit from slowing down, taking time for myself. Reading is one of my greatest joys and I will be gifting myself for time for that pleasure. And for spending time with my own journal, and out in nature just being, being present and alive.

Cats are the supreme examples of how to relax into the moment so here is one of Sparky enjoying the sunshine back in 2015. (although I tend to sit in the shade in the summer these days).

So, in the spirit of less 'doing', this is a short reflection this time, and an early newsletter so you can take advantage of chances to connect this week if you would like to do that.

This month I won't offer suggestions for your journal or meditation, simply my wishes for you to enjoy August - whether it is mid summer or mid winter where you are in the world.

Midsummer Magic Art Sale - last few days

This ends on 31st July. A few paintings have already gone to new homes, with a good selection still left, including the two below.

Any of the original wax art paintings on my website are yours for a 'Make me an offer' price' - anything you would like to suggest over £15 (plus postage and packing to wherever you are in the world), will secure the painting you choose to have in your home, or to purchase as a gift. Here are two examples:

The painting above is called 'Energy Number 2", and is 6" x 8" in an 8" x 10" mount.  Most of the others are a little smaller, such as this one below "Ocean Depths". Click on the paintings to see more, each will take you to one of the two pages on the website.

There is a note at the top of each of the pages, the individual paintings still display their full prices. Simply reply to this message or email separately if you would like to make an offer.

Time for You

As mentioned above, there is a taster for this on Wednesday 27th (as this is short notice, here is the Zoom link for 11.00 am UK time
https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84464117839 )

We begin on 1st August, a four-week circle on the theme of 'Time for You' For many people that time is busy with families and holidays, and yet that may mean it is doubly important to find a quiet, safe space, just for you? Just for an hour?

For others, when friends and family are busy on holiday, it can feel a little lonely. Maybe seeing this time as a gift, an opportunity to quietly reflect would change that feeling for you?

There will be a weekly Zoom call on Wednesdays at 11.00 am, and a private Facebook group with very light content. For those of you who prefer not to connect there, I can easily send you those prompts by email, so this could be a good one to join for a gentle flow together over the four weeks. The fee is £96 for the four weeks, and we can arrange payment by instalments if that suits you.

Your Powerful Voice

The next six-week turn around the Compass Rose will begin on 5th September, and end on14th October. I am not sure yet whether the Zoom gatherings will be on Wednesdays at 11.00 am or Thursdays at 2.30 pm (UK times) - that will partly depend on who is interested and where in the world you are.

There will be taster circles on Thursday 25th August at 2.30 pm, and  Wednesday 31st August at 11.00 am.

'Your Powerful Voice' is not yet listed on the Workshops and Events page of the website, but will be soon. Contact me by simply replying to this email if you would like more details, or to book a place.

I send wishes for health and happiness for you and all you love.

Thank you for joining me here this month, any thoughts, feedback, or questions are always welcome.

July 2022 Letting go

Welcome to the Dare to Blossom Newsletter

Reflections: Letting Go

Letting go can sometimes be the hardest thing... whether it is a choice, something to celebrate even, or if it is something that happens against my will. Either way, there is a form of grief attached to letting go of anything.  For me, it was a long time before I recognised that grief has so many forms, and is prompted by so many different circumstances in my life.

When I realised that grief was the emotion I often feel when 'letting go', and that I could feel a complicated mix of joy and grief, it began to make more sense to me. Every change in life involves releasing something.

This theme, this thought of 'letting go' was prompted by something I was celebrating - pressing the 'Send' button on the email to my publisher, Alice at the Golden Dragonfly Press, with the final version of the manuscript for 'Your Compass Rose Speaks: Rediscover Your Inner Wisdom'. The final version for now of course, once the Press has worked their magic in editing and formatting, I will see a proof and have another opportunity for final tweaks before the book is published. This a perfect example of a joyful celebration with a tinge of sadness.

Other instances of letting go in my life have been leaving jobs, mostly for me through compulsory redundancy due to closure of the organisation or at the end of funded programmes in the public sector. And then there is decluttering, choosing what things are 'beautiful, useful, or bring me joy' and letting go of those that do not. Books in particular become such precious friends that some I really cannot pass on. And yet, the clearing creates literal and metaphorical space for the new to arrive in my life.

The biggest letting go is the death of someone I love. This month is the second anniversary of my brother Roger's sudden departure through a heart attack. A huge shock to us all. The loss never lessens, and yet things do change. We are connected in very different ways than we were in life. Unlike last month, when I wrote about being 'Ambushed by Grief', here, now, I am at least partly prepared. Prepared to feel sad, and prepared that - maybe not this year, maybe some time in the future, I will not feel quite the same way. I read something recently about how loss, and grief, never goes, yet it becomes incorporated into who we are as we continue living our days, difficult as carrying on feel at first.

Here is the last photo I have of us together, in September 2019, one I know I have shared here before.

Since my mother died in 2005, I notice how that grief has changed. The circumstances of her death were very different, we shared many conversations before that day, and I choose to believe she is with me still. And yet, naturally grief is also still present, yet it changes as time goes on, and lessens in intensity.

My mother often joins me in my meditation visualisations, and on my 'Magic Carpet Rides', often with a powerful message. I know she doesn't want me to be sad.  And now, my brother joins me too. Sometimes we fly together like the buzzards that soar in the skies over Cornwall. Spiralling up, up into the blue, calling to each other with that haunting cry. Just recently, after I had been watching a pair of buzzards overhead, when I came to open the door to my garden office, there on the step, between the parked car and the building was a buzzard feather.

I don't presume to advise anyone else on 'letting go', and especially not when you are grieving a death. Yet, I hope, if you read these words, there may be some comfort for you.

Some suggestions for your journal or meditations. Be very gentle with yourself, choose something that will only take you where you wish to go today. If you truly want a deep exploration, or suspect you may be taken there anyway, set the scene so you feel safe and supported. You will know what is right for you.

  • Flow-write about 'letting go'
  • Doodle, draw, or collage an image - use this as an exploration of what you do not know yet about how you feel - sometimes words are not needed.

Midsummer Magic Art Sale

If we are connected on Facebook you may have already seen this - although you are the first to know that I have decided to extend the time scale to 31st July.

Any of the original wax art paintings on my website are yours for a 'Make me an offer' price - anything you would like to suggest over £15 (plus postage and packing to wherever you are in the world), will secure the painting you choose to have in your home, or to purchase as a gift. There is a note at the top of each of the pages, the individual paintings still display their full prices. Simply reply to this message or email separately if you would like to make an offer. As I look through these paintings, each feels like an dear friend, and I realise that sending them out to new new homes is another 'letting go'.

Time for You

People have asked for advance notice of what is coming next. At present I am planning a four-week circle on the theme of 'Time for You' during August, beginning on 1st and ending on 26th. For many people that time is busy with families and holidays, and yet that may mean it is doubly important to find a quiet, safe space, just for you? Just for an hour?

Books in my reading pile

The book that is completely entrancing me just now, as I knew it would, it 'She is Here' the final part of the trilogy by Gina Martin. Those of you who know me will know that I love Gina's writing, I find it so special that I choose to read her books in small chunks - in spite of the fact they could be described as 'page-turners', drawing you into the story.

Another is the third edition of 'Moon Time; by Lucy H Pearce, also from Womancraft Publishing. I am honoured to have contributed a small piece to this edition.

Finally, I have contributed to this book, compiled by Dan Teck and Jodi Chapman. My copy is yet to arrive, so it is not yet physically in my reading pile. It is available via Amazon wherever you are. If you click on the photo, there are details of special gifts available up to 20th July.

I send wishes for health and happiness for you and all you love.

Thank you for joining me here this month, any thoughts, feedback, or questions are always welcome.

June 2022 Ambushed by Grief

Reflections No 1: Ambushed by grief

Reflections No 2: Taking stock
Taster Circles and the next Compass Rose programme: 'Weaving Shadow and Light'

Dare to Blossom Monthly Circles on Zoom - a choice of day and time

Reflections No 1: Ambushed by grief

I had begun writing a practical piece about taking stock as we come to the middle of 2022, and then... this morning grief  sprang up and slapped me - anyone who has ever lost someone (or experienced any other grief, (here are many losses in our lives), will know this feeling I am sure.

Scrolling through my ‘memories’ on Facebook, as I enjoy doing each morning, with all the photos of my walks and fun things I have shared on this day over the years, there it is - a sweet photo of someone who died suddenly. And here come the tears.

The words above were the ones I chose to share with my community on Facebook, some of whom know me very well, and others less so. I also wrote: "PS I chose this painting as I don’t want
to share the photo, and the bright sparks of connection are still there."

The photo that 'ambushed' me was taken in 2015, by the motorcycle dealers where my brother bought a classic motorbike - I remember being surprised then as my brother didn't take part in Facebook as far as I know, but presumably he had given them permission. I had shared their post, and had forgotten - even though I imagine it would have popped up last year too.

I thought of sharing that photo here, and now I have decided not to do that, maybe another time, maybe not.

Anyway, somehow, today, it had an impact. Maybe we prepare, whether consciously or not, for the anniversaries when we expect to be thinking of people no longer with us - birthday, Christmas, the significant dates around a diagnosis maybe, and then those connected with a death and a funeral.

Life and death, and grief, are all part of life. Today I was humbled by the messages of support I received in reaction to my Facebook post. And - I know that grief is always with me, for all the losses in my life.

I am currently reading
Lamentations of the Sea by Dr BethAnne Kapansky Wright (2nd Edition 2019, Golden Dragonfly Press), about the author's grief at losing her brother suddenly, written at the time, so her words are sometimes raw and very moving. The subtitle is "111 passages on grief, love, loss, and letting go" - I have been dipping in and reading it slowly and gradually. Some passages are prose, some poetry, some short, some longer.

Here is a short piece, number 11, on page 19:

The very thing that ails you
in this darkest of place
is the very thing
that will eventually see
you through to the light

Love is both wound and balm

I am not feeling in 'the darkest of places' now, yet this chimes with my thoughts earlier, that we only feel grief when we lose someone, or something, we love, or that is important to us.

In another piece, on page 26 entitled 'Heart', there are these words:

"Your heart is doing what it is built to do: love, feel, break, heal.",
and "Don't be afraid to let it do what it needs to do to release, remember, repair, renew."

As I mentioned above when I shared the piece I wrote on Facebook, there are so many losses in life, and often we do not take time to grieve, to feel, to allow, and to move on. Some losses are connected with change, a change that may be positive - changing jobs or moving house perhaps - and yet there is sadness, and maybe grief, in saying goodbye. A celebration as well as a letting go.

Reflections No 2: Taking stock

And so, after that 'ambush',  I have decided to leave the piece I had begun on 'Taking stock' here for you too.

The sixth month of the year is almost here. I am sure you, like me, often reflect on the strange nature of time. Sometimes proceeding so slowly, at others flying by. Sometimes feeling, for me at least, as if it loops around itself, bringing memories of long ago that feel like they were yesterday.

For me this time, the middle of the year, of this year 2022, is a perfect time to pause, to take stock. And then - to take action. I have literally have been taking stock, of books, paintings, and the Dare to Blossom Rediscovery Cards. Those have not exactly been 'flying off the shelves' in marketing-speak. Quite rightly, people tend to take their time to consider whether, and when to buy - but even so packs of the Original cards and the No 2 decks have been steadily wending their way to people around the world.

For me, it is good to be mindful of how we spend our money  - and not simply for financial reasons. I like to remember the saying people use for decluttering: "Is this useful? Is this beautiful? Does this bring me joy?" before I make the decision to buy anything new (or secondhand, in the case of many of my books).

Here are the cards from a recent circle - such a wonderful selection of words and colours. Some from the Original Deck, many from No 2 - I use them mixed together.

For your own reflections or meditation - today you may like simply to choose one or more of the words to flow-write with and see where that takes you?

  • What is your first response to the word?
  • To the colour?
  • What else is there?
  • And, what else?
  • What does a second card add to the first?

Taster Circles and the next Compass Rose programme: 'Weaving Shadow and Light'

The next Compass Rose six-week programme begins on 20th June. Midsummer, or midwinter, always feels the perfect time to follow this theme. I rewrite some of the material every time, and in any case, if you have been before, you will know how different and special each particular 'turn around the Compass Rose' is each time. The people are different, you are different.

I chose this favourite image to illustrate the programme this time. Is the darkness inside the tree intriguing? Scary? A little of both? What is inside? A staircase going down? Or up? A fairy grotto? A magical cottage with a warm fire, a comfy sofa, a kettle already boiling ready to make a pot of tea? (These could be some more writing or meditation prompts for you.)

There are three taster circles scheduled, at times I hope will suit people in different parts of the world - the final decision on when we will meet during the programme will emerge as people experience the process n the tasters. I will offer two times each week if that is best, although it is always good to all meet together live on Zoom when we can. Read more here....

Taster Circles:
